Yoga Alliance Breathwork Certification for Yoga Teachers (2026)

Yoga Alliance doesn't certify breathwork. What YACEP hours mean, which breathwork trainings count as CE for yoga teachers, and what they cost.

Yoga Alliance doesn’t issue a breathwork certification. It credentials yoga schools (200-, 300-, and 500-hour teacher trainings, plus children’s and prenatal yoga) and the teachers who graduate from them. When a breathwork course calls itself “Yoga Alliance accredited”, it means something narrower: the course is run by a Yoga Alliance Continuing Education Provider (YACEP), and registered yoga teachers can log its hours as continuing education.

That is still useful. Registered teachers log 30 hours of training and 45 hours of teaching every three years to keep their registration, and a breathwork course can cover the training part. But the certificate comes from the school, not from Yoga Alliance, and the CE approval says nothing about how well the course teaches breathwork.

Do Yoga Teachers Need a Separate Breathwork Certification?

Not to teach pranayama in a yoga class. Pranayama is part of every 200-hour curriculum, so leading ujjayi, alternate-nostril breathing, or a slow breathing practice at the end of class is already within what you trained for.

A breathwork certification becomes worth it when you want to:

  • run stand-alone breathwork classes or workshops
  • work one-to-one with clients on stress, sleep, or breathing habits
  • guide conscious connected breathing, a higher-intensity practice that yoga teacher training doesn’t cover and that can bring up strong emotional and physical reactions
  • market yourself as a breathwork teacher or facilitator, not only a yoga teacher

Check your insurance before you add stand-alone sessions. Many yoga policies only cover the modalities you listed, so breathwork may need to be added. Our breathwork insurance guide covers what to ask.

Oxygen Advantage for Yoga Teachers

Oxygen Advantage sells yoga versions of both its certifications. The Breathing for Yoga Instructor course costs €449, runs about 55 hours across 18 self-paced modules, and counts for 50 non-contact and 5 contact hours of Yoga Alliance CE. You need a 200-hour certificate to claim them. The advanced yoga version costs €995 and adds seven two-hour live sessions with founder Patrick McKeown.

Both teach functional breathing (nasal breathing, breath assessment, and CO2 tolerance) applied to yoga, not conscious connected breathing. Our Oxygen Advantage review covers the method and its limits.

Loka Yoga School

Loka’s online breathwork training is the cheapest option here at $399 for 50 YACEP hours. It covers 28 techniques, the anatomy and physiology behind them, and trauma-informed facilitation. It’s self-paced, and Loka says some students finish in a weekend, which tells you how little supervised practice is involved. The price includes three months of access, after which access renews automatically at $4.99 a month until you cancel.

YOGABODY Breath Coach

Lucas Rockwood’s Breath Coach course is the most yoga-specific. It’s taught live on Zoom for ten weekdays, and each day pairs a breathing technique with a lecture and a movement block on breathing in yoga, lifting, and recovery. It counts for 30 hours of Yoga Alliance CE, and also for ACE and ICF continuing education. Tuition is listed at $1,000 and was discounted to $695 in October 2026. Our breathwork coach certification guide compares it with other coach programs.

Whole Health Project: Breath Coach Training

Run by two yoga teachers, the Whole Health Project sells a 25-hour breath coach course and a 10-hour trauma-aware facilitation course together for $429. Both are pre-recorded and self-paced. The hours are approved as Yoga Alliance continuing education and also count as CPD and as NASM and AFAA CEUs. It teaches gentle, functional practices and when to refer a client on, not conscious connected breathing. See our full Whole Health Project review.

Max Strom: Breathe to Heal

A seven-day, roughly 40-hour in-person retreat with yoga teacher Max Strom, approved for Yoga Alliance CE. The November 2026 training in Austria costs €1,550 to €1,750, plus €1,008 to €1,212 for lodging and meals. It suits yoga teachers who want to learn slow, regulating breathing in person from an experienced teacher. Read our Max Strom review.

Breath of Gold

The only program in the table that trains you to guide full conscious connected breathing sessions. It’s a four-month, 90-hour online facilitator certification for $4,997, approved for continuing education by Yoga Alliance, NASM, and AFAA. Choose it if you want to lead stand-alone breathwork sessions and still log the hours. Read our Breath of Gold review.

If breathwork standards matter more to you than Yoga Alliance hours, Soul of Yoga, a registered yoga school, runs a 10-month, 50-hour online breathwork certification for $975 that earns the GPBA’s “Ethically-Compliant Breathworker” designation.

What Yoga Alliance CE Does and Doesn’t Tell You

Only experienced registered teachers (E-RYTs) in good standing can become YACEPs. So a YACEP course tells you the teacher has yoga teaching experience, and that your hours will count toward your registration.

It doesn’t tell you the course teaches breathwork well or safely. YACEP status belongs to the teacher, not to a breathwork curriculum. For breathwork-specific standards, the closest thing is the GPBA, which our accreditation guide explains along with the other badges you’ll see. Whatever the badge, ask how much supervised practice you get, how the course teaches health screening and contraindications, and whether it covers conscious connected breathing.

Which Option Fits What You Want to Teach

  • Breathing cues and pranayama in your classes: your 200-hour training already covers this. If you want the CE hours anyway, Loka, the Whole Health Project, and Oxygen Advantage’s Breathing for Yoga course are the cheapest.
  • Functional breathing for students with stress, sleep, or fitness goals: Oxygen Advantage or YOGABODY.
  • Stand-alone sessions with conscious connected breathing: Breath of Gold, or a facilitator training without Yoga Alliance hours from our best breathwork certifications.
  • Trauma-sensitive work: see our trauma-informed breathwork training guide.

Breathwork sessions usually pay more per hour than yoga classes. Our salary guide compares the two.
