Shamanic Breathwork Facilitator Training Review (2026)
A review of Linda Star Wolf's Shamanic Breathwork facilitator training at Venus Rising. We cover the real cost of both levels, the ministry and degree add-ons, and who it suits.
Shamanic Breathwork is the method of Linda Star Wolf, who created it in 1996 and runs it through Venus Rising, a nonprofit based in Whittier, North Carolina. According to the school, Star Wolf studied Holotropic Breathwork with Stanislav Grof, Rebirthing with Leonard Orr, and Integrative Breathwork with Jacquelyn Small, and she has more than 30 years of experience in counseling and addictions work. Omega Institute’s teacher page describes her as a therapist and nationally certified alcohol and drug counselor.
The method is a group ceremony. It combines connected breathing with drumming, “chakra-attuned” music, bodywork, art, and group sharing, inside an explicitly shamanic spiritual framework. Venus Rising’s motto for its training says a lot: “The Healing is the Training, The Training is the Healing.”
Our view in short: if you want an immersive, ceremonial training and you are comfortable with shamanic spirituality, this delivers a clear path to running groups in about a month of in-person time. But it is a fast route to a facilitator certificate, and the ministerial ordination and university degrees offered alongside it are spiritual credentials that should not be mistaken for professional ones.
How a Shamanic Breathwork Session Works
Venus Rising describes a ceremony that opens with smudging (burning sage, cedar, and sweetgrass) and prayerful invocations. Participants lie down and call on whatever is sacred to them, “spirit guides, power animals, and higher powers.” Then drumming starts, and participants breathe in a deep, connected rhythm to a music set designed to move through the chakras, for typically one to two hours. Art and group processing follow.
During the breathing, facilitators may step in with what the school calls shamanic-psycho-spiritual tools: bodywork, “Shamanic Reiki,” “Soul Return,” and “Extractions.” The school says participants report states ranging from “divine, otherworldly bliss states to the struggle to be released from negative forces in the psyche,” along with rebirthing experiences and life reviews.
The physiology underneath is the same as other long, connected breathing practices like Holotropic: one to two hours of deep connected breathing produces strong altered states. The interpretation is where Shamanic Breathwork goes its own way. Soul loss, power animals, and energy extraction are the working concepts, not nervous system or trauma theory.
The Certification Path
Venus Rising has four levels.
Level 1: S.H.I.P. (Shamanic Healing Initiatory Process). A 14-day immersion built around six initiations themed on the elements (water, earth, fire, spirit, air) and “imaginal cells.” It focuses on your own process. Graduates become Shamanic Breathwork Initiates, can practice with friends and family, and are asked not to charge yet. Completing S.H.I.P. also makes you eligible for ordination as a Shamanic Minister. It runs in person or online, with the online version at four hours a day over two weeks.
Level 2: Facilitator Skills. Another 14-day in-person immersion, described as 100+ hours, covering bodywork (including “rebirthing, resistance, conscious touch, permission, boundaries and energy clearing”), building chakra-based music sets, art processes, group processing, and the basics of setting up as a professional. Graduates become certified Shamanic Breathwork Facilitators, cleared to host ceremonies for individuals and groups.
Level 3: Master Practitioner Apprenticeship. A 300+ hour individualized program. You repeat S.H.I.P. and Facilitator Skills as staff, attend 10 mentoring sessions (four group, six private), and demonstrate proficiency in running a ceremony. Venus Rising says this program is registered with the Global Professional Breathwork Alliance as an accredited qualification.
Level 4: Satellite Internship. For Master Practitioners who want to run their own S.H.I.P. trainings as an authorized Venus Rising “Satellite.”
The key fact is the gap between Level 2 and Level 3. You are a certified facilitator after about 28 days of training, and the school describes that certificate as covering everything “from in-depth containers that meet over a period of days, to introductory sessions at bookstores, festivals, yoga studios.” The GPBA-registered qualification is Level 3, not Level 2. If you want the version of this training that has outside recognition, budget for the apprenticeship.
Shamanic Breathwork Cost
Venus Rising publishes prices for each event. For its current calendar, they are:
| Training | Location | Price (USD) | Included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1: S.H.I.P. | Bali | $3,400 | Shared dorm and meals |
| Level 1: S.H.I.P. | Online | $1,600 | - |
| Level 2: Facilitator Skills | Bali | $3,400 | Shared dorm and meals |
| Level 2: Facilitator Skills | Portugal | $4,400 | Shared rooms, two meals a day |
Booking both Bali trainings together takes $600 off, so the two levels come to $6,200. The cheapest route we can see is online S.H.I.P. plus Facilitator Skills in Bali, at $5,000. The most expensive combination on the current calendar is Bali S.H.I.P. plus Portugal Facilitator Skills, at $7,800. Flights come on top, and a private room in Bali is $600 extra. Level 2 does not appear to be offered online.
Deposits are non-refundable: $500 for the Bali and online trainings, and $800 for Portugal. Full payment is due 60 days before an in-person start. The tuition for the Master Practitioner Apprenticeship is not published. You request details by email and schedule an interview.
Our older comparison pages listed Shamanic Breathwork as “from $3,500, 14 days.” That was the price of Level 1, which does not certify you as a facilitator. The figures above replace it.
The Ministry and the University
Two parts of the Venus Rising offer need a plain explanation.
Shamanic Minister ordination. Venus Rising is a 501(c)(3) church, and completing S.H.I.P. makes you eligible for ordination. The school lists ministerial roles including baptism, marriage, “healing the sick,” and spiritual counseling. A legal ordination can be useful in some places, for example to officiate weddings. It is a religious credential, not a professional or clinical one.
Venus Rising University degrees. Venus Rising University offers a Bachelor of Sacred Elemental Studies ($9,000), a Master of Shamanic Intuitional Practices ($6,000), and doctorates in Shamanic Psychospiritual Studies ($7,500 each), with Venus Rising programs and life experience counting toward credit. The university’s own page explains its status: its degree programs are exempt from licensure in North Carolina under a provision for religious education, and “exemption from licensure is not based upon assessment of program quality under established licensing standards.”
That is the fact we would want any buyer to know. These are religious degrees from an unaccredited institution. A “doctorate” from Venus Rising University does not make you a doctor in any professional sense, and presenting it to clients as if it does would be misleading.
The Evidence
We found no research on Shamanic Breathwork as a method. The broader research on high ventilation breathwork shows that long connected breathing has strong effects on the nervous system and is worth studying for trauma and mood disorders, but that says nothing about soul retrieval, energy extraction, or chakra-attuned music. We did not find the school claiming a scientific basis for the method.
The “shamanic” label is worth a thought too. Star Wolf says she received Wolf Clan teachings from Twylah Nitsch, whom she calls her adopted Wolf Clan Grandmother. The school frames its work as honoring ancient shamanic lineages while “Awakening the Shaman Within.” Whether Western schools should use the word “shaman” at all is debated, and some clients and venues will have views on it. Factor that into how you plan to market your work.
Community Feedback
We found no independent reviews of the training on Reddit, Trustpilot, or similar sites. What exists is the school’s own material, Star Wolf’s teacher listings at places like Omega Institute, and reader reviews of her books, where two reviewers complained that the books describe the method only briefly and point readers to her workshops. For a school running since 1996, the lack of independent discussion of the training means you will have to vet it yourself, ideally by speaking to facilitators from the Venus Rising directory.
Pros and Cons
What works well
- Published prices - Every event lists its price, what is included, and the deposit terms.
- Accommodation included - In-person tuition covers shared lodging and most meals, which makes the totals easier to compare.
- Immersive format - Two 14-day residentials give you a lot of time in the room, both breathing and facilitating.
- Experienced founder - Star Wolf has three decades of counseling and addictions work and trained with the founders of Holotropic and Rebirthing.
What doesn't
- Fast certification - You can run groups after about 28 days of training. The GPBA-registered level comes later.
- Credentials that oversell - Ministerial ordination and unaccredited religious degrees are easy to misrepresent to clients.
- No evidence base - Soul retrieval, extractions, and chakra-attuned music have no research behind them.
- Travel required - Level 2 is in person only, at locations like Bali and Portugal.
Shamanic Breathwork Market Comparisons
Shamanic Breathwork vs. Holotropic Breathwork
Star Wolf trained in Holotropic Breathwork, and the two share the core format: long group sessions of connected breathing with evocative music. Holotropic takes two to three years, entirely in person, for $7,000 or more in tuition plus substantial travel, and frames the work in transpersonal psychology. Shamanic Breathwork gets you to facilitator level in about a month for $5,000 to $7,800, and frames it in shamanic spirituality. Choose Holotropic if you want the deeper, slower, more rigorous training. Choose Shamanic Breathwork if you want a ceremonial frame and a faster path to running groups.
Shamanic Breathwork vs. Psychedelic Breath
Psychedelic Breath also runs altered-state group sessions, but in the frame of festival and electronic music culture rather than ceremony. It costs €4,500 to €5,000 for about 100 hours, plus a €22 monthly license. Shamanic Breathwork has no license fee after certification that we could find, and includes lodging in its retreat prices. Choose Psychedelic Breath for a modern, European studio brand. Choose Shamanic Breathwork if ritual, drumming, and spiritual ceremony are what you want to offer.
Shamanic Breathwork vs. Alchemy of Breath
Alchemy of Breath costs $5,800 to $6,900 for 400+ hours over four to eight months, with shadow work and a residential in Tuscany. The price is similar, but Alchemy builds more hours into its core certification. Choose Alchemy if you want more training time before you are certified. Choose Shamanic Breathwork if the shamanic ceremony is the point and you are willing to do the Master Practitioner apprenticeship for depth.
Who This Is For
- Ceremony-oriented practitioners - You want to lead ritual-based group journeys, and drumming, smudging, and spirit guides fit your work.
- People who learn by immersion - Two weeks at a time in residence suits you better than months of Zoom calls.
- Those planning to go all the way - You intend to complete the Master Practitioner apprenticeship, not stop at Level 2.
Who Should Pass
- Evidence-first professionals - If you need research-backed methods, look at functional breathing certifications.
- Clinicians and corporate facilitators - The shamanic framing will not travel into clinical or most corporate settings.
- Anyone who cannot travel - Level 2 is only offered in person, usually overseas.
Shamanic Breathwork Verdict
Shamanic Breathwork is what it says it is: a spiritual ceremony with connected breathing at its center, taught by a founder with real experience in both breathwork lineages and addictions counseling. The pricing is transparent, the retreats include lodging, and the format gives you a lot of time inside the work.
Our reservations are about what the certificates mean. Level 2 makes you a certified facilitator after about four weeks of training, cleared to run groups at festivals and studios, while the GPBA-registered qualification sits a level higher with unpublished tuition. And the ministerial ordination and Venus Rising University degrees are religious credentials from an unaccredited institution that, by its own statement, is not assessed on program quality. Described accurately, they are harmless. Presented to clients as professional qualifications, they are not.
Bottom line: A good fit for spiritually committed practitioners who want to lead ceremonial group breathwork and who plan to continue to the Master Practitioner level. A poor fit for anyone who needs evidence-based framing, clinical or corporate credibility, or a fully online path.
Before you book, ask Venus Rising for the Master Practitioner tuition and terms, and talk to a facilitator or two from its directory. Our transformational breathwork certification guide compares the other spiritual programs side by side.
